If you live in California and receive SNAP benefits, you may know the program here is called CalFresh. This guide walks you through everything you need to know — from how to apply and check your balance, to when your benefits are deposited and what you can buy with your EBT card. We’ve also included tips on using CalFresh online and finding other programs that may help your household save money.
What is CalFresh?
CalFresh is California’s version of SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as “food stamps.” CalFresh provides low-income individuals and families with monthly funds for groceries.
How do I apply for EBT SNAP in California?
- You can apply online at BenefitsCal.com, and we recommend the online application because it’s the easiest option for most people.
- Optionally, you can also visit GetCalFresh.org to access helpful information related to SNAP eligibility and how to apply. GetCalFresh is an authorized outreach partner that works to increase access to CalFresh.
- If you’d prefer, you can apply in-person. CalFresh provides a map you can use to locate your County Office.
- In some counties, you may be able to apply over the phone. To confirm, we recommend you contact your County Office or call CalFresh’s Information Line at: 1-877-847-3663.
What is the Golden State Advantage card?
The Golden State Advantage (GSA) Card is the name for the EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card that the State of California gives out. It works like a debit card to pay for food benefits and cash aid (such as CalWORKs) for those enrolled in those programs.
You can use the GSA card at retail stores, online grocery delivery stores and apps, and ATMs that display the Quest® logo in California and nationwide.
How can I check my EBT balance?
- You can check your EBT balance using the ebtEDGE website, iOS app, or Android app. ebtEDGE is managed by California’s official EBT card issuer.
- Alternatively, you can check your balance over the phone by calling the state’s 24/7 phone line at: 1-877-328-9677.
In coming months, Forage also plans to support free, instant EBT balance checks in our app, alongside the deals and savings we offer. You can sign up to get notified when we add balance checks by downloading the app and following the in-app prompt to learn more about this upcoming feature.
When will I get my CalFresh deposit?
CalFresh deposits funds to EBT cards once a month on a fixed day based on the last digit of your case number:

How can I replace a lost or stolen EBT card in California?
As soon as possible, call customer service at: 1-877-328-9677. You will need to wait through two card number prompts without entering your EBT card number, then you’ll be able to report your card as lost or stolen and receive instructions on how to get a new card.
What can I buy with EBT SNAP / CalFresh in California?

The Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) requires an additional enrollment process. To qualify, you and everyone in your household must be 60+ years old, disabled, and/or experiencing homelessness. To request RMP access, call your county’s CalFresh office or the state line at 1-877-847-3663 and request RMP activation. The state provides a map of participating restaurants.
Can I buy groceries online or have them delivered with SNAP EBT funds in California?
- Yes, you can buy groceries online and/or have them delivered while paying for the eligible food in the order with EBT SNAP. Delivery fees, tips, and any other fees specific to online ordering aren’t eligible to be paid with your EBT card.
